Kachil / Kavath/ Purple Yam is a root tuber. Kachil / purple yam is high in carbohydrates and low in protein and fats. Purple yam has proven beneficial for human urinary, respiratory and nervous system.
Kachil/ Kavathu Puzhukku are a traditional Kerala dish which is special prepared during Thiruthira.
This is the photo of our Kachil / Kavathu which was grown in our kitchen garden. This curry was prepared using our home grown Kachil / Kavathu.
Ingredients:
Kachil/ Kavath/Purple yam ½ kg
Red chilli powder 1 tsp
Turmeric powder ½ tsp
Salt to taste
For grinding:
Coconut grated ¾ cup
Cumin seeds/ jeera ½ tsp
Pepper 6 -7
For seasoning:
Mustard ½ tsp
Dry chilli 2
Curry leaves 2 springs
Garlic (chopped long) 5
Coconut oil 3 tsp
Method:
- Peel and clean the kachil / kavath/ purple yam and cut into 1“ pieces.
- In a pressure cooker add the kachil pieces, turmeric powder, salt and 2 cups of water and cook till 1 whistle. Put off the flame. Open the cooker when the pressure settles down.
- Meanwhile grind the grated coconut, cumin seeds and pepper into coarse mixture.
- Add the ground coarse paste to the cooked kachil and mix well. Cook on high flame till it starts bubbling. Reduce the flame to low and cook for 2 – 3 minutes. Put off the flame.
- In a pan heat coconut oil. Add mustard seeds and when it splutters. Add curry leaves, dry chilies and garlic and fry on low flame till the garlic changes it color to light brown put off the flame. Add this seasoning to kachil puzhukku.
Tasty kachil puzhukku is ready. U can serve it with rice or u can have it as it is.
